After
many years fronting bands that featured much heavier sounds and
widespread use of technology, Christian Beach has emerged as a
singer-songwriter following in the traditional footsteps of Bob Dylan,
the Band and Jeff Tweedy. With stripped-down arrangements featuring
sparse, melodic piano, country-flavored acoustic and electric guitars,
and mandolin accompaniments, Beach belts it out with style and
Hank Williams soul.
In February
2009, Beach's self-titled, 12-song
CD was released through CDBaby.com and is
also available from iTunes and Amazon.com. The CD features top-notch
veteran musician Gary Mazzaroppi (Les
Paul
Trio, Norah Jones), who adds legendary stand-up bass to many of the
tracks, and other industry veterans, such as guitarist John Pfeiffer
(Well of Souls, In Between Dreams)
and drummer Rob
Angello (Secret Syde, The Blases). Christian has also logged studio
time with
producer
giant Jason
Corsaro of Steve Windwood and Peter Gabriel fame, to name just a select
few.
The solo CD marks a definitive departure from the sound
of Beach's earlier musical projects, the alt/industrial-tinged Slave of
Id and Artists That Kill, and the more mainstream rock act Ton of
Bricks.
"Over
the past several years, I have been listening to mostly older music,"
said Beach in a March 2007 interview. "I was listening to a lot of Bob
Dylan, The Band -- even going back to Hank Williams. I realized that
country music was very fascinating to me. Hank Williams was an amazing
songwriter -- very raw with incredible ideas and minimal
instrumentation. That was a pretty big inspiration to me.”
In
June 2011, music writer Gary Wien released his book, "Are You
Listening?", which ranked "Christian Beach" as one of the top 100 CDs
released by New Jersey artists between 2000 and 2010, putting it
alongside releases by Bruce Springsteen, Fountains of Wayne, My
Chemical Romance, and fellow independent artists Arlan
Feiles and Keith Monacchio.
"Considering all of the
great music that came out of New Jersey during the first decade of the
21st century, I'm honored -- and humbled -- to be included in Gary's
book," said Beach.
New music is expected from Beach in the second half of 2011.
Having
played on the Jersey Shore music scene for more than a decade,
Beach spent 2008 branching out into new markets with shows at
KatManDu in
Trenton, NJ; Triumph
Brewing Company in both Philadelphia and Princeton (NJ); Maxwell's in
Hoboken, NJ; and The National Underground and Googie's Lounge/The
Living Room in New York City. He also performed at the Dewey Beach
Music Conference in September 2008.
